MSI History
We'll quickly dive into the MSI tournament's history to better understand how it has evolved into the behemoth of an esports tournament it is today.
The Mid-Season Invitational is an annual League of Legends premier tournament organized and run by Riot Games. It was first held in 2015, and since then, it has become one of the most prestigious events in the LoL competitive scene. The tournament brings together the top-performing teams from various regional leagues to compete against each other.
The first-ever MSI event was held in Tallahassee, Florida, and featured only six teams worldwide. These teams included EDward Gaming, SK Telecom T1, Fnatic, ahq Esports Club, Team SoloMid, and Beşiktaş e-Sports Club. T1 came out on top, beating EDward Gaming in the close grand finals.
MSI typically takes place in April or May of every year and has been hosted in tons of different cities from across the globe, ranging from Brazil to Germany, bringing excitement to LoL fans from around the world as the competition becomes fiercer with each passing year.
MSI 2024 will take place at Chengdu, China, with twelve teams competing. It kicks off on May 1, 2024 as the halfway point between each's regions first and second seasonal splits. It ends on May 19 with the Grand Final.

The Mid-Season Invitational for League of Legends has two stages: the Play-In Stage (aka the Group Stage) and the Bracket Stage. Unlike last year, there will be twelve teams competing instead of thirteen.
The Play-In stage begins with the second seed from LEC, LCK, LPL, and LCS, as well as the top seed from LLA, CBLOL, PCS, and VCS, for eight teams.
The top four teams from the Play-Ins will join the four major region champions for eight teams in the Bracket Stage.
Play-In Stage: May 1 - 5
- Eight teams are divided into two groups
- Double-elimination bracket, all matches are Bo3 (a minimum of two matches will be played a day)
- The top two teams from each group advance to the Bracket Stage draw
- The bottom 2 teams from each group are eliminated
Bracket Stage: May 7 - 12, May 14 - 19
- Eight teams play in another double-elimination bracket
- All matches, including the all-important final match, are Bo5
A new rule for MSI 2024 is that the winning team earns a direct qualification to 2024 LoL Worlds, guaranteeing a slot for their region.

While MSI 2023 was hosted at the Copper Box Arena in London, MSI 2024 takes the teams across the globe to Chengdu, China, specifically the Chengdu Financial City Performing Arts Center.
Tickets have completely sold out, but there will be region-specific live-streams to accommodate all fans who want to watch the action online. There will be many official broadcasts, as well as partners streaming the event - check out the official Liquidpedia page for the complete list.
MSI 2024: Prize Pool
The Mid-Season Invitation 2024 prize pool stands at $250K, which will be split amongst all twelve competing teams.
Regardless of their overall qualification, every participating team will get a slice of the overall prize money. We have listed a rough, bare minimum estimate of how this money could be divided below.

MSI 2023: Teams
Twelve teams are competing in the 2024 Mid-Season Invitational. There will be two teams, the winning teams and runner-ups, from the major Riot Games regions (LPL, LEC, LCS, LCK), for eight teams in total. MSI 2023 winners JD Gaming missed out on their chance to qualify this year.
The remaining four regional leagues, LLA, CBLOL, PCS, and VCS, each get one slot for their region.
