LEC History
LEC, or the League of Legends EMEA championship, is a professional League of Legends league specifically for for European competitors, with a three-season split format as Winter, Spring, and Summer. These tournaments are all seperated by "big" international tournaments, with the Mid-Season Invitational in Spring and the League of Legends World Championship (LoL Worlds) after the Summer Split.
The first ever LEC Spring Split was in 2013, organized by Riot Games. The tournament was originally called the League of Legends Championship Series Europe (LCS EU). The Spring Split featured eight professional teams competing for that all-important spot in the LEC Playoffs, held in April of that year. Fnatic won the inaugural LEC Spring and have since won many LEC tournaments in their career.
In 2018, the LCS EU rebranded to become what we now know as the LEC. The 2018 LEC Spring Split featured a new format, expanding to include ten teams. The regular season was split into two groups of five squads, with the top three teams advancing to the playoffs.
LEC 2025: Format
LEC 2025 will have splits in Winter (January/February), Spring (March/April), and Summer (June/July). The season is then brought to a close by the LEC Finals, which are held in August.
All upcoming LEC matches are held at the recently-revamped Riot Games Arena in Berlin, designed to captive audiences watching games in person and at home via live-streams.
For all LEC tournaments, ten teams will battle in three-four weeks of intense single round-robin matches during the regular season. The top eight teams then advance into the Bracket Stage, otherwise known as the Playoffs. This includes an intense double-elimination bracket. The opening two rounds are Bo3 while the following rounds are Bo5.
LEC 2025: Prize Pool
A prize pool of €80,000 EUR is divided between the top four teams. The LEC Summer champions take home a juicy portion of €40,000. The runners-up get €25,000. Third and fourth place gets €10,000 and €5,000, respectively.
The team that takes the LEC crown in LEC Winter also qualify for the Mid-Season Invitational in May, which is one of the biggest League events in the professional scene after LoL Worlds.
